About Special Education

The special education program at Stratford is designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities.  Once students are identified as having a disability, they are placed on an Individualized Education Plan and begin receiving special education services.  The amount of time each student spends in a special education class is different for each student, based on his or her unique needs.  My goal is to help the students learn strategies to overcome their disabilities and progress toward the standards for their grade levels.

Stratford School uses a Response to Intervention approach to intervention and special ed.  Thanks to recent changes in California state law, students without disabilities are now allowed to visit special education classes as well.  When teachers notice that a student is struggling, we implement various intervention strategies to help the child find success in school.  If the child needs more intensive intervention, he or she may visit special education for part of the day.  It is wonderful to see students make progress when they are given the right tools!
